"This series of abstract graphite drawings (now numbering over 200...) are from the artist's Drawing-a-Day series. They sprung from a need to create pieces where he could experiment with techniques and styles that had been acquired within the drawing medium.
These arose from a need for spontaneous pieces that could be completed within a day....that had less "hanging in the balance". It was a way to revisit his love of what the artist terms "organic abstract"-- hinting at natural forms but like modern poetry: less literal and more evocative....allowing the viewer to interpret them in their own way.
Who: John Shlichta is a transplant to Portland via Seattle and New York City. He grew up in the Los Angeles harbor town of San Pedro, California where the influence of his large and wacked family allowed him to cultivate a love of all things abstract, overlooked, abandoned, and forgotten.
He looks to nature in its infinite structures, systems, and processes to find metaphors to describe the many facets of the human condition.
